Summer Camps for Children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

The following list identifies camps, family learning vacations, and remedial clinics for deaf and hard of hearing children. Some programs are designed for the entire family. Most camp programs require a small application fee to accompany the completed application. Contact the camp sponsor directly for more information about their program. Some camps are directed toward children who use sign language, others who use spoken language and a few for children who use cued speech. There are some listings of camp experiences for children with typical hearing who have a track record for adapting/accommodating for the needs of children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Sending your DHH child to a non-DHH camp offers great opportunities for independence, socialization, and confidence building. Many students forge great relationships with other campers that last for years. Preparing for the camp experience requires proactive preparation in the areas of communication, access, technology, and safety.  Here are some tips:

  1. Evaluate Communication Access
  2. Protect Equipment
  3. Ensure Safety and Emergency Protocols
  4. Educate the Counselors and Campers
  5. Advocate with Local Organizations

The Statewide Outreach Center in Texas offers a Tip Sheet for parents sending their children to summer camps.

Gallaudet offers a comprehensive list of summer camps for deaf children.

The National Deaf Center also offers “Stories from Summer Camp” with tales told from Deaf adults about their experiences at summer camp.
