Description

5th Grade – Adult“Latin and Greek Roots provides numerous engaging activities for teaching words containing common Latin and Greek roots found in content area texts. This book is a must for intermediate and middle school teachers!”

-Marcia Henry, Professor Emerita, San Jose State University

Students with hearing loss are not exposed to new vocabulary at the same rate as peers due to decreased overhearing, and they require knowledge of morphology to assist them in unlocking the meaning of new words. With Latin and Greek Roots: Teaching Vocabulary Using Hands-On Activities and Common Objects students will master a comprehensive set of high-frequency root words. Forty complete lesson plans feature hands-on activities in which students discover a Latin or Greek root. For example, students use reading glasses to make print visible, draw an object that is invisible to them, and greet visitors in an effort to discover the meaning of the Latin root, vis (to see).

Within the discovery section of the lessons, the teacher engages in an ongoing dialogue with the studentsto purposefully guide them through the discovery process. Writing activities reinforce new vocabulary and help students extend their use of the Latin and Greek roots. The pre/posttest is included to document student progress.
