Understanding Sarcasm

Sarcasm especially, can be one of the most difficult types of communication to process. It requires putting together tone of voice, body language, and facial expression.  These three elements together, using sarcasm, are actually the opposite of the literal meaning. But how do our students know that? Explicit instruction and repetition.

Social cues

SSCHL is excited to add books and materials that can be used for teaching and supporting social skills! For grades K-6, ages 5-11 years.

“Freddie the Fly: Connecting the Dots” by Kimberly Delude illustrated by Brian Martin. Freddie the Fly has quite a conundrum! He’s misunderstanding social cues and is very confused about what people mean when their words say one thing, but their bodies say something else (sarcasm).  This sweet story shows the steps to help connect the communication dots.
